Chicago City Council Approves Greyhound Station Purchase and Airbag Theft Penalties

The Chicago City Council has recently approved two significant measures aimed at enhancing public safety and urban development.

Increased Penalties for Stolen Airbag Resale

In response to a surge in airbag thefts—1,200 cases reported between January and April this year—the Council has passed an ordinance increasing penalties for the resale of stolen airbags. This initiative, sponsored by Alderman Gilbert Villegas, seeks to deter such thefts and protect vehicle owners from this growing crime trend.

Acquisition of South Loop Greyhound Station

Additionally, the Council has authorized the city’s purchase of the Greyhound bus station located in the South Loop for $19.2 million. While some council members, including Alderman Marty Quinn, have expressed concerns about the city’s role in managing transit hubs, proponents argue that this acquisition presents an opportunity for urban redevelopment and improved transportation services.

These decisions reflect the city’s ongoing efforts to address public safety challenges and invest in infrastructure that meets the evolving needs of Chicago residents.
